Superintendent's Update - January 31, 2022
Good Morning Washington Local,

After last week, I thought it would be good to review some information about how decisions are made regarding weather delays and cancellations. We consider multiple factors when making a weather decision including timing, temperature, forecast, staffing, and the types and amount of precipitation on the ground and/or predicted. Traditionally, we have used the threshold of -15 degrees windchill or temperature when delaying or canceling school due to cold. When snow falls, timing is a big factor. If we can safely clear sidewalks and parking lots, if the city and Township have been able to clear major streets (we drive these streets early in the morning just to double check) and if the forecast doesn't call for more snow or extreme temperatures, we make a decision based on those factors. These are not the only factors, but as we head into a week with snow in the forecast, it's a good time to review that there are many considerations when calling a delay or cancellation. There has never been a time when an email or social media post has swayed our opinion. We take the safety and education of our students seriously and make decisions based on many factors that may not be apparent to everyone.

Last week, the Ohio Department of Health made some adjustments to COVID quarantine protocols. We will be meeting with the Lucas County Health Department today to clarify the information as it specifically relates to schools. We believe these changes will help students miss fewer days when they've been exposed to COVID and as long as they remain healthy. Please continue to report positive cases to your school nurse and we will provide updated guidance as it becomes available.

As a reminder, this Friday will be our first early release. Junior High and High School students will be released at 12:30 and elementary students will be released at 1:30 on Friday, February 3. Your individual school will send more information later in the week.

Have a great week and stay well.
