Chromebook Cleanup Time

These directions usually help solve the typical Chromebook problems listed below. Odds are these steps will solve many problems that are not listed.

Random search redirect problem
  • You search for something and after a few seconds the page reloads to a different page / blocked page / etc.
  • Everything you search for is blocked
  • Websites refuse to let you log in
  • Websites display incorrectly / missing parts of a webpage

  1. Remove any theme add-ons
    1. Open the Chrome Browser on your Chromebook
    2. Click on the 3 vertical dots near the X in the top right corner
    3. Click on Settings
    4. Type ‘theme’ in the settings search box
    5. Under Appearance > Browser Themes click on ‘Reset to Default’ if available

  2. Remove all ‘extra’ search engines listed in the Chrome Browser
    1. Open the Chrome Browser on your Chromebook
    2. Click on the 3 vertical dots near the X in the top right corner
    3. Click on Settings
    4. Scroll down to Search Engine > Manage Search Engines
    5. The only search engine that should be listed there is Google. Use the three dots at the end of each search engine listed in the top group to remove everything else.
    6. Use the three dots at the end of everything listed under ‘Other Search Engines’ to remove any other search engines running in the background

  3. Remove all ‘extra’ apps that you are allowed to remove
    1. Open the Chrome Browser on your Chromebook
    2. Click on the 3 vertical dots near the X in the top right corner
    3. Click on More Tools > Extensions
    4. Each app will appear as a ‘card.’
    5. Click on the ‘Remove’ button for any app with that button

  4. Erase all saved passwords, forms, etc. and clear the cached (locally saved) webpage information
    1. Open the Chrome Browser on your Chromebook
    2. Click on the 3 vertical dots near the X in the top right corner
    3. Click on Settings
    4. Type 'history' in the search box at the top
    5. Under 'Privacy and security' click on 'Clear Browsing Data'
    6. Click on the 'Advanced' tab
    7. Change the time range drop down to 'All Time'
    8. Check mark ALL of the boxes
    9. Click on 'Clear data' button
    10. After a few seconds (depending upon how much you have saved) the screen will refresh and you will be back to your Chrome Browser

  5. Shutdown and restart your Chromebook
    1. Click on the clock
    2. Click on the Power Icon to fully shutdown
    3. Restart the Chromebook
    4. DO NOT just close the lid
