Individuals who are 16 and older, are withdrawn from school and have not earned a high school diploma are eligible to take a high school equivalency test. Parental consent also is required for those who are 16 or 17 years of age. Students must register online for the test of their choice and submit all required documentation to the Department’s Ohio High School Equivalence Office. The state of Ohio has approved three different testing assessment companies: GED , HiSET and TASC; The Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma will be recognized as the Ohio Certificate of High School Equivalence as of Sept. 14, 2016. All previously awarded Ohio High School Equivalence Diplomas will still be considered valid; and Age requirement change for 16-, 17- and 18-year-old test takers including:
- Per House Bill 113, Ohio Revised Code 3301.81 - Effective Date: Sept. 14, 2016
- Rule: Ohio Administrative Code 3301-41-01 (The rule is currently going through a rule change process)
- To take the Ohio High School Equivalence tests, an eligible applicant must meet the following criteria:
- A test applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
- A test applicant must be officially withdrawn from school through the Whitmer Assistance and Resource Center.
- A test applicant may not have received a high school diploma or honors diploma awarded under section 3313.61, 3313.611, 3313.612, or 3325.08 of the Ohio Revised Code.
- A copy of the withdrawal form signed by a school official must be submitted to State of Ohio High School Equivalence Office through the Whitmer Assistance and Resource Center.
- Test applicants who are a minimum age of 16 years, but less than 18 years of age may apply under the following criteria
- A test applicant must be officially withdrawn from school through the Whitmer Assistance and Resource Center.
- A test applicant may not have received a high school diploma or honors diploma awarded under section 3313.61, 3313.611, 3313.612, or 3325.08 of the Ohio Revised Code.
- A copy of the withdrawal form signed by a school official must be submitted to State of Ohio High School Equivalence Office through the Whitmer Assistance and Resource Center.
- A test applicant must provide written approval from the parent, guardian or court official. A signed and notarized consent form must be submitted to the State of Ohio High School Equivalence Office through the Whitmer Assistance and Resource Center.
